(Ann the Writer/Producer, Michael Holmes, Fred Pleitgen, and Tommy Evans.)
From Michael Holmes’ FaceBook note:
Yes, WikiLeaks is still out there, dropping “diplo-bombs” every day, causing red faces in US embassies around the world, but also enlightening us to some of the many sub-plots that are going on in various nations.
While those sub-plots are fascinating, they’re also frustrating to people like us – journalists who have long heard whispers about certain controversial issues but have never been able to get official confirmation (in fact, often the opposite – being told by officials that the “whispers” from sources were downright untrue).
Folks like our wandering Producer Pal Tommy Evans have been left shaking their heads and muttering “I KNEW it…”
Fortunately for us, Tommy is in Atlanta at the moment, filling in for Resident Brit (and Director of Coverage) Lord Roger Clark.
You can more often find Tommy in Islamabad or Afghanistan or Iraq or some other far flung and often controversial locale, working with the likes of Nic Robertson, Reza Sayah or, on a couple of occasions…me!
Tommy has spent a lot of time in Pakistan and today will fill us in on the head shaking moments provided by WikiLeaks revealing cables from the US embassy in Islamabad to the bosses in DC.
…Great BS coming your way, followed by a quiet (!) beer or two with Tommy and Man Mountain Pleitgen after the show!
Always good to know that what one suspects is right but the real concern is security and people’s lives. It must be frustrating though being told by Government Officials that your thinking is wrong only now to know for sure that there is proof that you were right.
Sorry that I didn’t get the clip up last night — technical difficulties, which I hope to resolve tonight. My DVDR didn’t like the blank DVDs I have, so I have to go out and buy some more. Sigh. (I just love spending money on myself this time of year … not! The website renewal and my .Mac renewal both come up in December, as well. As if things aren’t tight enough! And now I have to buy more DVDs, when I have 40 or so of them already? Grrr, aargh.)
Anyway, hopefully I will have some Tommy goodness uploaded tonight.
BTW, I am also planning a re-do of the site so that there is a mobile-enhanced version as well. I had hoped to have it done last week (5th anniversary of the site *clink!*) but again … gotta buy new software, so that has to wait awhile.
You have done very well with your website which is generally interesting. Five years is a very long time. It is always harder at this time of year with everything that has to be paid and prioritising everything. I wish you well with your finances.
Thanks, Susan! I’ve said from the beginning that I think all video journalists should have sites like this — it’s not right that I can go online and see Michael’s work from Time in 2000 on their site but his CNN stuff from a year ago is already lost to the ether. The networks are not archiving it, but someone ought to be. I started doing Michael’s almost by accident, the little site that grew and grew and grew!
What a waste that the networks are not archiving there very important Work which is a heritage. It is a tribute to you that you value Michael’s work and it will be valued not just for now but in years to come.
Thanks, Susan!
