My apologizes for being so far behind in posting clips — I got the first 6 from Tuesday posted (finally!) and hope to get the other 12 done in the morning (fingers crossed and being mindful that I have an ATC post to get ready before I leave for work.) And of course, then I can start on Wednesday’s clips!

Remember a long time ago when I called him Mr. Prolific? Man, he re-earned that title this week. I have no idea when he got any sleep — 40 clips in three days. Just amazing. And no one has the kind of contacts he does in Iraq, nor understands the feeling of the Iraqi people as much as he does. And over and over again he made the point that the American people should be pausing to remember the 4,324 American men and women who died in Iraq over the past six and a half years. He really does understand this story from every angle.

I was thinking the other day that when I first heard the name Michael Ware, he was still with Time and his television appearances were fairly rare. Never did I anticipate that the website would turn into as massive an undertaking as it later became after he made the transition to CNN. When I started, he was saying things I had not heard from any other journalists at the time — that the White House was lying, that the insurgents were not just that bunch of so-called “dead-enders,” that our troops were not being properly prepared for what they were facing over there. Like so many Americans, I knew no-one being deployed and was content to let someone else worry about what was going on in Iraq.

I also remember the hell of 2006 and 2007, when the slaughter of Iraqi civilians was at its worst yet the neocons in this country were still in control of the war and their vapid followers wrapped themselves in the flag and called anyone who dared speak the truth a traitor. And they called Michael that, plenty. They called me that for having the website! Had they just watched some of the clips and listened to what he was saying, they would have learned much; instead they vilified him.

The Drudge debacle … what a nightmare that was! I can’t even imagine the kind of hate mail that went to CNN, but I was stunned by the venomous bilge that I got. Not just name-calling, but wishes for his death. Some even described, in horrifying detail, what they hoped would be done to him. All for the crime of being a reporter and speaking the truth.

Now, people understand the mess we made of the invasion. People understand the value of having reporters who give us the story warts-and-all, even if it puts us in a bad light. Those of us who do not go to war need reliable people to tell us the truth of what is happening, so that we can honor the sacrifices, correct the mistakes, and aid the innocent victims.

I don’t blame the Iraqi people for celebrating the beginning of our drawdown. By not understanding the sectarian differences, our civilian leadership screwed up what could have been a far less bloody and acrimonious ending to a horrible dictatorship. Our men and women in uniform have paid for that malfeasance with their lives and limbs … but so have the Iraqi civilians.

Hopefully, the day will come when Iraq is once again a peaceful country, its streets thronged with people, its economy thriving. I hope to someday be able to travel there, to see the country that Michael’s work made me care about, and to honor the fallen from both sides.

Meanwhile … I listen to what he says, and keep trying to understand the complexities.

Cyn, I couldn’t have said it better.

Michael’s personality and delivery made me take an interest in world affairs that I probably would not have had otherwise.

Time and CNN really did a good thing putting him on their team.

I can’t take one more minute of Michael Jackson. And I am a fan. Cyn, tell us where to write CNN to beg for more real news and less tabloid junk?

Thank you for the CNN comment link, I just sent my positive Michael Ware comments to them. It has been remarkable all these years to have seen and read Michael’s reports from all over the world.

I do not care about what the prez has to say about MJ. CNN already lost talent in Miles O’Brien. They are going to lose Mick and a lot of viewers if they continue with tmz type of news.

I also sent an email to CNN. It was so great to finally have him on AC 360. And good to get his view about Afghanistan. What I like with him is when he speaks, you listen to him. You do just listen to him! Main issues of this world are clearer for me after having heard him. You just feel like you’re also a part of the story. He brings you there…

Well, if I see a news or a tweet giving the link to the video of the last MJ rehearsal one more time, I will shout louder than the singer of the Metal rock band rehearsing near my building!

    Cyn,

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

He really made me take notice: he was saying things no one else was saying. His delivery. His style. He MADE you care .

He wasn’t afraid to say, we f’d up. I said it before, but I hope he knows what an amazing job he’s done and that it is appreciated & admired, respected by many.

No apologies needed regarding posting the clips. You do an amazing job. Chronicling his work & with that the story of the war.

I am sure I speak for everyone, including MW: Thank you for all your hard work.

I am so glad I found your site and “met” so many amazing people. No matter how “fan girl” we may get sometimes :) At the end of the day we all have immense respect for MW as well as all the war journos who put their life on the line to tell the story

I sent in a complaint Wednesday morning to CNN. Essentially I echoed the same sentiments as everyone else – let TMZ report on every ludicrous detail of MJ’s life. Hell, CNN has been reporting on what they don’t know about MJ … like a freakin’ count down to some great revelation! “Here’s what we don’t know ….”.

Oh yeah …. I may have casually mentioned the need to bring quality reporters … like … say … Michael Ware … back to the forefront – because what he reports is important … and because it might help restore CNN’s tattered reputation.

After reading Cyn’s report and all your comments, I spent some time to think about Michael Ware and his style and why I think his style is dramatically different from most other reporters, and why it’s so darn effective. Here’s what I came up with (and I’m really sick, so it could be all crap. In which case, I’m blaming it on the cough meds):

With Michael Ware, I feel I always get the best story he can possibly give us. I never feel like we didn’t get his “A” game. Also, I think he really and truly cares about the people he’s reporting about, and that shines through whether it’s Mr. Ware reporting on survivors of foreign atrocities for CNN or a local newscaster doing a fluff piece about a horse camp for kids. Caring ALWAYS counts.

I also never feel like he’s doing a story solely for the ratings. I feel like he’s doing the story because it matters to him and he thinks it should matter to us. (He’s always right, IMNSVHO. LOL) There are reporters from other networks, and even, sadly, a few on CNN that are slowly turning from valued, honest, respected newscasters into ratings whores. *cough*MJCoverageAnyone?*cough*.

Maybe this all comes from his disconnect. He’s Australian, not American, so there’s a certain distance there. It’s much easier for a close friend to smack you around and give you a good “Snap out of it!” ala Cher. We are often too close to the situation to see the forest for the trees. Mr. Ware tells us not only which are which, but warns us about forest fires, too.

Maybe it comes from his background with Time where he had quite a bit of leeway. I don’t know. All I know is I want him to keep doing what he’s doing. It’s working.

And if he could “accidentally” turn off the MJ coverage, I’ll be eternally grateful.
